The MLF BFL's have been a co angler/boater format since 2000. Due to the number of entries decreasing over the past several years and the complaints about FFS, MLF made a rule change in 2026. Instead of unlimited use of FFS in BFL's they restricted it's use to 3 hours . This was an effort to bring back some anglers that left the derbies because of FFS. The change didn't produce the results as intended. So they made a major change starting in 2027, eliminating co anglers and switching to a team format.
